VanMoer Goes Distance in 5-3 Win

The Marshall A's stopped their losing streak at three games on Friday night, rallying from a 2-1 deficit to beat the Pipestone A's 5-3.

Ryan VanMoer (2-1) went the distance for the A's, allowing just three hits while striking out seven.

Pipestone jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but the A's answered back with a run in the bottom half when Jon Ellis scored VanMoer with an RBI groundout.

The score remained 2-1 in favor of Pipestone until the A's took the lead in the seventh. Alex Thompson led off the inning with a bunt single, and then a few batters later came around to score on a wild pitch. Ellis followed with another RBI, this time a double to score Mason Penske and give the A's a 3-2 lead.

Marshall tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning when Barry Meyer singled, stole second and then scored on another Pipestone wild pitch. VanMoer followed with a single to score Nick Macchio.

With Marshall leading 5-2 heading to the ninth, Pipestone threatened and managed to cut it to 5-3, and then put the tying run on second base with two outs. But a key mound visit from manager Justin Greenwood worked wonders as VanMoer retired the final batter on the next pitch and gave the A's their fifth win of the season.

Meyer went 3 for 4 on the night.

Prior to the game, the Marshall Baseball Association inducted Dale Erickson and Jim Culhane into the MDI/Ace Hardware Marshall Baseball Hall of Fame.

Also before the game was the 4th Annual Alumni Home Run Derby. This year Derek Rignell and Andrew Kinney advanced to the finals before tying with three homers each. Kinney then won in a swing off, sending the third pitch he saw towering over the right center field fence.
