Marshall looks to snap streak on Sunday hosting Milroy

MARSHALL, Minn. — The Marshall A’s enter the Fourth of July break on a three-game losing streak suffering a pair of Corn Belt League losses and one non-league setback in a five-day span. The A’s will look to get the bats heated up for the final few weeks of the regular season when they return to action on Sunday with a league home game versus Milroy starting at 5 p.m. at Legion Field.

The A’s had their five-game winning streak snapped on June 28 with a tough 1-0 setback to Raymond at Legion Field before dropping a 4-1 decision at Granite Falls on June 30. The A’s stepped out of league play on July 2 and lost 5-2 at Minneota.

In the loss to Raymond, Cody Wichmann was solid on the mound tossing 6 2/3 innings and allowed one run on six hits with 10 strikeouts. Mitchell Bouwman fired 2 1/3 shutout innings with five strikeouts. The A’s had five hits in the game with Chase Douglas finishing 3 for 4 with two stolen bases, Wes Sarsland and Coby Brownlee each added one hit.

In the setback at Granite Falls, the A’s were limited to five hits with Douglas, AJ Toulouse, Ryan VanMoer, Logan Terfehr and Talan Plante each finishing with one hit. Sarsland drove in the only run for the A’s with a sac fly in the eighth inning. Charlie Jacobson started on the mound and fired two innings, allowing one run, one walk with three strikeouts. Mitchell Bouwman allowed three unearned runs in 3 1/3 innings giving up four hits with five strikeouts and six walks. Jake Eben closed the game tossing 2 2/3 innings with three strikeouts.

In the non-league loss to Minneota, the A’s took a 1-0 lead in the fifth behind a Wichmann RBI fielder’s choice. Minneota answered with three runs (two earned) in the fifth to build a 3-1 lead. The A’s cut the deficit to 3-2 in the eighth following an Owen Kesteloot RBI on a ground ball misplayed by the Mudhens third baseman. The A’s, which left 11 runners on base, stranded the tying run on base. Minnesota then added two unearned runs in the eighth to seal the win.

Dillon Loft started on the mound for the second time in his career and fired four shutout innings before Minneota scored in the fifth. Loft allowed four hits, one walk and one hit batter, while striking out two. Terfehr struck out four in two shutout innings, while Kesteloot pitched the eighth inning.

Douglas, Wichmann, Plante and Jacobson each had two hits, while Toulouse, Kesteloot and Ryan Schwagel all finished with one hit.

Marshall is 9-5 overall, 5-3 CBL.
