Marshall opens season with home win

MARSHALL: The Marshall A’s baseball team opened the 2025 season on Sunday night (May 18) with a 5-1 non-league victory over the Willlmar Indians at Legion Field.

Marshall used strong pitching from Mitchell Bouwman and Ashton Blomberg to earn the victory with the due combining to record 15 strikeouts and allowing just two hits and one unearned run. Bouwman tossed the first six innings to earn the victory allowing two hits with 13 strikeouts and no walks. Blomberg earned the three-inning save firing three shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts, while hitting two batters.

The A’s offensive attack cracked out 11 hits with Talan Plante, Dillon Loft, Logan Tomasek and Blomberg leading the way with two hits each. The A’s started the scoring in the first inning with Cody Wichmann leading off with a single and later scoring on a two-out RBI single by Tomasek. Marshall added to the lead in the fourth with Blomberg and Loft hitting singles before Plante hit a sac fly to left field to score Blomberg and make the score 2-0.

The Indians scored an unearned run in the sixth to cut the deficit in half but the A’s answered with a big three-run frame. Loft started the rally with a one-out single and moved to second on a walk to Wichmann. Plante then delivered the biggest hit of the night cracking a two-run triple to straight-away center field to make the score 4-1. Plante scored moments later on a throwing error to extend the margin to 5-1.

Wichmann, AJ Toulouse and Cannon Craigmile each collected a hit in the victory for the A’s with Craigmile smacking a double in his first career A’s at bat. Tyler Wichmann and Jackson Sirovy also had their first-ever A’s appearance and at bat in the game.

Marshall continues non-league action on Wednesday, May 21, with a 7:30 p.m. game at Pipestone. Marshall returns home on Friday, May 23, with a 7:30 p.m. game versus Sacred Heart at Legion Field. #StraightAs
