Marshall drops heartbreaker to Raymond, but rebounds to defeat Granite Falls

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Marshall A’s split of pair of Corn Belt League games this past weekend, dropping a 12-8 heartbreaker to the Raymond Rockets on Friday night in Raymond, before rebounding with a 9-1 home victory over the Granite Falls Kilowatts on Sunday evening.

Marshall is now 3-1 overall and will host Dawson on Wednesday, June 5, with first pitch at 7:30 p.m.

In the Friday loss, the A’s scored six runs in the top of the first with Wes Sarsland highlighting the inning with a two-run single. Logan Tomasek also added an RBI in the frame while Cooper Mensink coaxed a two-out bases loaded RBI.

The A’s held a 6-2 lead in the sixth before Connor Neubeck hammered an opposite-field solo home run to expand the lead. Marshall would add another run in the eighth with Tomasek collecting an RBI on a bases loaded walk to make the score 8-3.

However, disaster struck in the bottom of the eighth for the A’s as the Rockets scored nine runs on just three hits, taking advantage of four walks and a hit by pitch to rally for the 12-8 win.

Mitchell Bouwman started for Marshall and pitched seven-plus innings racking up 10 strikeouts, while allowing five earned runs on eight hits with five walks. Tomasek suffered the loss allowing five runs on two hits and three walks.

Peyton Grant, Neubeck, and Zach Olson each collected two hits in the game, while Braxton Koster, Dillon Loft, Ryan Schwagel and Sarsland had one hit each.

The local club rebounded on Sunday behind Cody Wichmann’s compete game four-hitter. He allowed one unearned run with nine strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, Marshall tied the game with Schwagel working a lead-off walk before later scoring on a two-out RBI double by Zach Olsen. The A’s would snap a 1-1 tie in the fifth with Ryan VanMoer stroking a one-out single followed by a single from Grant and a hit by pitch to Wichmann to load the bases. Neubeck gave the A’s a 2-1 lead with a fielder’s choice before Grant scored on a wild pitch. Olson would later drop in a two-out RBI single to make the score 4-1.

Marshall put the game away in the sixth loading the bases behind a walk to Charlie Jacobson, a single by Olsen and a walk to VanMoer. Grant delivered a run-scoring before Wichmann added another run with a fielder’s choice RBI.

The A’s added another run in the seventh with Schwagel drilling a one-out single before Sarsland hammered an RBI single to score pinch runner A.J. Toulouse and push the lead to 7-1.

The scoring continued in the eighth with Grant scoring on a wild pitch before Neubeck scored another run on a sac fly.

Every Marshall started had at least one hit with Olsen and Grant finishing with two hits. Wichmann, Neubeck, Olson, Schwagel, Sarsland, Loft, Jacobson and VanMoer all had one hit apiece.
