Marshall drops regular season finale; Region playoffs next!

The Marshall A’s closed out the 2024 regular season on Sunday, July 21, losing 11-4 to Corn Belt League champion, Bird Island, 11-4.

Bird Island held a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning before scoring seven runs with two outs to fourth to blow the game open.

Trailing 1-0 in the first, the A’s took the lead in the home half of the inning with Ryan VanMoer hitting a single and moving to third on a single by Wes Sarsland. Cody Wichmann tied the game with a sac fly before Peyton Grant smashed an RBI double to put the A’s in front 2-1.

The Bullfrogs took advantage of a walk and hit by pitch to tie the game in the second and then used a home run home run in the third to build a 3-2 advantage. Bird Island then put together the big two-out rally off A’s starting pitcher, Logan Tomasek, scoring seven runs and collecting six hits with two outs.

Marshall pushed across a run in the sixth with Braxton Koster dropping in an RBI single to score Wichmann, while in the eighth, Koster was hit by a pitch and later scored on a sac fly by AJ Toulouse.

VanMoer had two hits, while Chase Douglas, Sarsland, Grant, Koster and Talan Plante each had one hit.

Tomasek started and pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing 10 runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts. Charlie Jacobson pitched 1 1/3 and allowed one run on two hits with two walks. Karon Rowe fired a strong three shutout innings allowing just two hits, while Owen Kesteloot worked a scoreless ninth inning.

Marshall closes the regular season with an 11-10 record overall and finished fourth in the eight-team CBL with a 7-7 mark. The A’s now turn their attention to the nine-team double elimination Region 4C Tournament starting Aug. 3-4 in Willmar. The tournament continues on Aug. 9-11 in Willmar with the top three teams advancing to the state tournament. The A’s will for sure play one game on Aug. 3 and one game on Aug. 4. The opening game opponent and game times will be announced the weekend of July 27-28. #StraightAs
