MARSHALL, Minn. – The Marshall A’s finished a perfect week on Sunday June 16 earning a road victory over the 2023 Class C state runners-up, Bird Island Bullfrogs, to finish 3-0 on the week and improve to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the Corn Belt League.
Marshall opened the week on Wednesday, June 12, earning a 6-4 come-from-behind non-league game over Minneota, before defeating Wabasso, 12-2 in eight innings on Friday, June 14.
In Sunday’s victory, Cody Wichmann allowed just one hit in seven innings with four strikeouts and four walks. Charlie Jacobson earned the save with four strikeouts in the final two innings.
Peyton Grant led the A’s with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI, while Talan Plante, Connor Neubeck, Wes Sarsland, Ryan Schwagel, Logan Tomasek and Ryan VanMoer and Wichmann each had one hit. Marshall scored two runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh inning. Grant, Wichmann and Neubeck each had RBIs in the victory, while Grant scored on a wild pitch.
In the win over Wabasso, the A’s struck for six runs in the first inning and never looked back. Wichmann and Neubeck collected three hits, while Grant, Sarsland and Andrew Cowden each had two hits. Cowden smacked a two-run homer in the game for his first career long-ball with the A’s. Zach Olson added a hit, while Karson Rowe had an RBI single for his first career A’s hit.
Mitchell Bouwman earned the win firing six innings and allowing six hits and two runs (one earned) with eight strikeouts. Rowe had two strikeouts in two shutout innings of relief.
In the home win over Minneota, the A’s trailed 4-0 in the fifth, but scored two in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take the lead.
Jake Eben was solid in relief, firing seven innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts to earn the victory.
Neubeck had two hits for the local club, while Grant, Sarsland, Cowden, Coby Brownlee, Owen Kestelott, Logan Terfehr and Ashton Blomberg each finished with one hit. Blomberg had two RBIs, while Grant, Andrew Stelter and Terfehr all had one RBI.
Marshall returns home on Wednesday, June 19, to face Hadley in a non-league game starting at 7:30 p.m. The A’s are partnering with United Community Action Partnership encouraging all fans to bring any canned goods or nonperishable item to the ballpark to help strike out hunger in the area.
Following a road game at Brookings on Friday, June 21, the A’s will host Sacred Heart on Sunday, June 23, with first pitch at 5 p.m.
